Local Guide: What to Do in Santa Marta and Tayrona

From the boardwalk to the sea, from salsa to the jungle: here's what a week in Santa Marta looks like. We'll walk you through the plan, day by day.

Your One-Week Route Through Santa Marta and Tayrona

We put together this guide with the best the region has to offer, so your week in Santa Marta has it all: city life, jungle, parties, and rest. This route is designed for travelers splitting their trip between Viajero Santa Marta (city, salsa, nightlife) and Viajero Tayrona (jungle, beach, pool, and volleyball) — so go ahead and book your stay at both hostels to build out the full week.

💡 Tip: Ask at the front desk about departure times, transportation, and availability, since some activities may change depending on weather and season.

Day 1 – Wednesday:

We're easing in: colonial streets, sea breeze, and a sky on fire to close out the day.

  • Historic Center: Walk through the heart of Santa Marta: the Cathedral, Parque Bolívar, and the streets of South America’s oldest city.
  • The Malecón: Follow the bay: vendors, music, and local life facing the sea.
  • Sunset at Cabo Tortuga: About 25 min from downtown, this soft-sand, calm-water beach is known for the turtle-shaped mountain silhouette. Arrive before 4:30 pm for the best light.
💡 Tip: Bring cash for transport only, plus sunscreen — there's little shade at the beach.

Day 2 – Thursday:

Today it's all about moving your body: a salsa class to warm up, and a night out to top it off.

  • Salsa class at Viajero Santa Marta: No experience needed — local instructors teach you the basic steps with great music and even better energy.
  • Night out at La Brisa Loca: One of the Coast's best-known hostel parties, the perfect place to put your new moves to the test.
💡 Tip: Wear comfortable shoes for dancing and save some energy — the night runs long.

Day 3 – Friday:

A full day of nature. Two routes, same magic — pick based on your energy.

Tayrona National Park: Jungle, hidden beaches, and trails to Cabo San Juan. An unmissable classic of the Colombian Caribbean.

  • Hours: 7–8 a.m. to 5–6 p.m., depending on the season. Last entry at 4 p.m. via El Zaíno. 2026
  • Pricing: Foreigners pay between $73,500 and $96,500 COP, plus mandatory insurance. Colombians/CAN nationals from $27,500 COP.
  • Heads up: Closed February 1–15, June 1–15, and October 19–November 2, 2026, for ecological rest. Confirm dates at the front desk.

Quebrada Valencia: Natural pools and hidden waterfalls deep in the jungle, with far fewer crowds than Tayrona.

  • Getting there: Take a CootransOriente bus from Santa Marta's market (Cra 13 #11-60), departing every 20 minutes.
  • Price: Entry is roughly $7,000 COP, plus a 20-minute walk to the pools. Horseback option available for around $10,000 COP.
💡 Tip: Bring cash in pesos, water, and shoes that can get wet.

Day 4 – Saturday:

Compete by day, celebrate by night.

  • Volleyball tournament: Team up with fellow travelers at the hostel. Sun, sand, and friendly competition.
  • Party at Viajero: The night wraps up back home, with music, drinks, and the whole hostel's energy in one place.
💡 Tip: Sign up early at the front desk for the tournament — teams fill up fast.

Day 5 – Sunday:

After a jam-packed week, today's all about inner tubes and the pool.

  • Tubing: Float down the river on an inner tube, the most relaxed way to take in the jungle from the water.
  • Pool and chill: Wind down the week with no rush — just the pool, a hammock, and good company.
💡 Tip: The perfect day to recharge before your next adventure — Palomino and Minca are close by if you want to keep exploring.
