Best Hostels in Medellín: How to Choose Where to Stay
The best hostels in Medellín fit the way you want to travel. You might be arriving solo, hoping a conversation turns into a shared adventure. Perhaps you are travelling as a couple or need to work a few mornings. Choosing the right base shapes both your days out and the time you spend unwinding.
This guide compares El Poblado and Laureles, explains how to choose between a dorm and a private room, and suggests a three-day first visit. You will also find what Viajero Medellín offers in Manila and how to book a room that suits your plans.
If you are travelling solo, look for inviting common areas and activities you can join without bringing a group. With friends, compare the total cost of several dorm beds with a private room: a price per bed is different from the price of an entire room.
If you work while travelling, prioritise a comfortable space, power outlets and hours that fit your meetings. If nightlife is part of your trip, check quiet hours and your room's location too. A good night's sleep helps you enjoy the following day.
Check rooms and availability at Viajero Medellín.
El Poblado brings together cafés, restaurants and evening plans. Within this area, Manila suits travellers who enjoy exploring their surroundings and returning to a social hostel. Viajero Medellín is in Manila, surrounded by places to eat and cultural spaces.
Check the exact address before deciding. Hills, crossings and traffic can change a journey that looks short on a map. Staying in El Poblado does not mean every attraction or the metro is just around the corner.
Laureles may suit you if you enjoy discovering cafés, local shops and residential streets between outings. Compare journeys to the places on your itinerary and how you will get back at night. Some streets are lively, so assess each property's immediate surroundings.
Mark three things you want to do and compare travel from each option. A cheaper bed may work out differently once you add several daily journeys. Choose a neighbourhood that makes your plans easier, with time left to explore it slowly.
A dorm bed can leave more of your budget for activities and make starting conversations easier. Compare the number of beds, bathroom arrangements, storage and the exact room category. Bring an eye mask and earplugs if other schedules affect your sleep, and organise your belongings before your roommates turn in.
A private room gives you privacy while keeping common areas close by. It can work for couples, friends or solo travellers. Check occupancy, bathroom type and location: a private room does not guarantee silence if it is near a social space.
Look at the total for all your nights, including applicable taxes, meals, towels and activities. Read payment and cancellation terms. If you arrive early, ask about luggage storage; early room access depends on availability and your booking conditions.
Compare dorm beds and private rooms for your dates.
Viajero Medellín offers dorms and private rooms, a rooftop, restaurant and bar, coworking space, Wi-Fi, a 24-hour reception and luggage storage. You can head out to discover the city and return to somewhere you can connect with other guests.
The rooftop is a meeting point after a day exploring Medellín. Hostel activities help break the ice without having to organise every plan yourself. Check the schedule for your stay to find current times, spaces, costs and available activities.
If you need to work, ask how the coworking space operates and when it is best suited to concentration. Choose accommodation for the spaces you will actually use, alongside your priorities for rest, location and budget.
Leave room for the transfer and check-in. Save the address offline, locate anything you need nearby and explore Manila or the neighbourhood where you are staying. Later, ask about hostel activities and spend time in the common areas to meet other travellers.
Choose a cultural outing that interests you, such as the city centre or a guided visit to Comuna 13. Ask about the tour's focus, duration, meeting point and inclusions. Avoid squeezing in too many stops, and make time for lunch and an unhurried journey back.
Choose another neighbourhood, a café or a nature outing according to your interests and the weather. If you are continuing to Guatapé, add time to your route instead of fitting everything in before departure. Our guide to Guatapé from Medellín can help you choose between a day trip and a longer stay.

Three or four nights give you room for arrival, sightseeing and rest. If you work some mornings, add days so that every afternoon does not become a race.
Choose your dates and book your base for exploring Medellín.
Arrival and transport: share your estimated arrival time with the hostel and confirm how to get there from the airport or bus terminal. A 24-hour reception does not mean you can access your room at any hour.
Rest and activities: ask about music hours and distinguish included plans from paid activities and third-party tours. If you go out at night, organise your journey back and save the accommodation address.
Booking conditions: check age policies, required documents, payment and cancellation terms. Compare room categories and prices for the same dates and number of guests.
Look for a social atmosphere, common areas and activities that fit your interests. Viajero Medellín is an option in Manila with dorms and private rooms: meeting people does not require sharing a bedroom. Check the schedule for your dates.
Rates vary with dates, room category, occupancy and booking terms. Compare the full stay and what is included. Check current availability rather than treating an old price as a guide.
Viajero Medellín lists Wi-Fi and coworking. If you need video calls or specific connectivity, ask about the space and check recent guest feedback. Have a backup connection for important meetings.
You can take a day trip or add one or two nights to spread your visit across the town, the Piedra del Peñol and the reservoir. Confirm transport and its conditions before leaving. Our Guatapé getaway guide can help you plan your next stop.

Party Hostels in Colombia: Medellín or Cartagena?
It's seven in the evening in El Poblado and the rooftop pool already has ten people in it, beer in hand, while someone switches the reggaeton for salsa choke and nobody objects. Two hours earlier, half that group were strangers. That's how almost every night starts at a hostel in Medellin — and it's exactly why so many travelers choose Colombia when what they're after isn't just sightseeing, it's the party.

In El Poblado, the night has its own rhythm. It starts early, with the hostel crew organizing the "pre" on the rooftop — a speaker, dim lights, someone pouring aguardiente into plastic shot glasses — and stretches until the sky starts to lighten. Medellin has the country's most varied music scene: salsa in Parque Lleras, electronic music in the clubs along Calle 70, reggaeton on any corner with a speaker loud enough. A good hostel doesn't send you out to find the party on your own — it puts you right in the middle of it, with people to live it alongside.

Cartagena parties differently. Where Medellin organizes its nights around bars and rooftops, in Getsemani the party spills straight onto the street — live bands on street corners, plastic tables turned into dance floors, Caribbean heat that doesn't drop even at midnight. It's a rawer, less choreographed energy, and deeply contagious. Spend a few days at a hostel in Getsemani and you'll quickly understand why this neighborhood became shorthand for backpacker partying across Latin America.

Not every "good vibes" hostel delivers. The ones that genuinely work as party hostels have an on-site bar or social area where the music doesn't stop at ten; real programming — themed nights, pre-drinks organized by staff, not just a bluetooth speaker in the common room; a pool or rooftop, because partying in Colombia is almost always lived with your feet in the water; and a location within walking distance of the city's nightlife — El Poblado in Medellin, Getsemani in Cartagena — so no one has to choose between staying in or going out.

The difference between the traveler who's exhausted by week two and the one who's still got energy at the end usually comes down to pacing, not how much partying they did. Alternate a big night out with a hammock-and-movie night. Sleep in when you need to. The best hostels understand this better than anyone — which is why they separate social zones from rest zones, and why staff are so good at giving the advice nobody asked for: "rest up tomorrow, Thursday's the big one."
Medellin or Cartagena for partying? Depends on the kind of night you're after: Medellin has the club scene and musical variety; Cartagena has street-level energy and Caribbean weather. Plenty of travelers just do both and compare.
Are party hostels safe? Yes, as long as you pick well-reviewed hostels with staff actually present — which is exactly what separates a well-run party hostel from a party with no one minding it.
Can you experience this traveling solo? It's actually one of the most common ways to do it — the party removes the "I don't know anyone" barrier from night one.
Is there somewhere to rest if I don't want to party every night? Yes — the best party hostels keep rest areas separate from the social zone, so you can choose your own pace night by night.
Before booking, ask what is scheduled for your dates and which activities cost extra. Check the property’s exact location and how you will get back after going out. A social atmosphere does not mean the same events run every night.
A shared dorm can help you meet travelers and manage your budget. A private room offers more personal space, but does not guarantee silence near a bar. Ask about music hours, house rules and room location.
Agree on transport with your group, look after your belongings and keep the hostel address handy. Balance nights out with quieter days so you can enjoy the destination too.
