Guides to explore Oaxaca and its coast

How to Get from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido: Transportation Options

Getting from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido takes you from markets and mountain scenery to the Pacific coast. Choose your transport around your budget, luggage and arrival time, and book your stay before setting off.

Which road connects Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido?

The faster route uses the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla toll highway, connecting the Oaxaca–Puerto Ángel road with Federal Highway 200 on the coast. It is different from continuing along the mountain route via San José del Pacífico.

How long does the journey take?

Allow roughly three hours for a direct road journey under favorable conditions, and extra time for terminals, stops or delays. Bus schedules can be longer. Check the route and total duration with the operator before booking because traffic, weather and road conditions can change the estimate.

Take a bus

A bus is a practical choice if you want a reserved seat without driving. Check current Oaxaca–Puerto Escondido services with ADO and compare departure and arrival terminals, luggage allowance, journey time and ticket conditions. Check the final fare for your date before paying.

Choose a departure that leaves time to reach your accommodation. Buy ahead for busy periods and keep your ticket and hostel address available offline.

Rent a car

A rental car gives you flexibility with luggage and departure time. Confirm insurance, pickup and return arrangements, fuel policy and toll costs. Check the planned route and allow extra time for rain, traffic or maintenance.

San José del Pacífico belongs to a different mountain itinerary. Mazunte is an additional coastal stop. Neither should be treated as a quick stop included in the direct journey estimate. Add time if you want to visit them.

Book a shared van or private transfer

Compare operators and confirm pickup, drop-off, luggage space and whether tolls are included. A shared van may make intermediate stops. A private transfer may suit a group sharing the cost. Get the full terms before paying.

Where to stay at each end of the route

Use Viajero Oaxaca as a base for exploring the city before your coastal trip. In Puerto Escondido, check availability at Viajero and plan the transfer from the terminal to the property. Compare shared dorms and private rooms for your dates.

Frequently asked questions

Does the highway have tolls?

Yes. Include tolls in a driving budget and confirm whether a transfer quote includes them. Check the current amount for your vehicle and route.

Is San José del Pacífico on the direct route?

No. Plan it as a separate mountain itinerary rather than adding it to the direct highway journey.

How much does the bus cost?

Fares vary by date, departure and service. Check the operator’s current quote instead of relying on an old published price.

Day of the Dead in Mexico: Where to Stay in Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido, and Mexico City

Day of the Dead isn't just another date on the Mexican calendar — alongside Rio's Carnival and Valencia's Fallas, it's one of the most recognized celebrations in the world. On November 1st and 2nd, all of Mexico fills with marigolds (cempasúchil), altars, papel picado, and a way of honoring those who've passed unlike any other tradition. It's not "Mexican Halloween" — it's a deep, colorful, community-driven tribute to memory.

If you're in Mexico during those dates, three cities together give you the full experience: Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido, and, above all, Mexico City.

Oaxaca: the heart of the tradition

Imagen de ChatGPT 30 sept 2026, 08_14_15.png

For many, Oaxaca is where Day of the Dead is lived closest to its roots. Cemeteries fill with families spending the night beside their loved ones' graves, with music, food, and candles. Comparsas move through downtown, and altars go up weeks in advance.

Staying in Oaxaca means witnessing the celebration in its most community-driven, least "staged for tourists" form.

Mexico City: the biggest party

Imagen de ChatGPT 30 sept 2026, 08_13_01.png

CDMX now has the country's largest Day of the Dead parade: giant catrinas, comparsas, music, and hundreds of thousands of people filling Paseo de la Reforma and the Zócalo. It's bigger, more urban, more "spectacle" than Oaxaca — but just as impactful.

CDMX also offers the Zócalo's monumental altars, the offerings in Mixquic, and a city worth the trip any time of year on its own.

Puerto Escondido: the beach counterpoint

Imagen de ChatGPT 30 sept 2026, 08_12_01.png

After intense days of altars, comparsas, and crowds, Puerto Escondido offers exactly the opposite: beach, surf, and disconnection. Many travelers combine Oaxaca with Puerto Escondido as a route closer — the Mexican version of the "intense culture + beach" combo that anyone who's done Cartagena-Santa Marta in Colombia already knows.

How to experience it respectfully

Day of the Dead is, above all, an intimate moment for Mexican families:

- Ask permission before photographing family altars or graves.

- Don't touch or move elements of an ofrenda without being invited to.

- If you join a parade or comparsa, do it from a place of enjoyment and respect.

FAQ

When is Day of the Dead? November 1st and 2nd, though celebrations usually start several days earlier.

Is it the "Mexican Halloween"? No — it's its own tradition, centered on honoring deceased loved ones.

Which city is best for the main parade? Mexico City has the largest parade; Oaxaca offers a more intimate, traditional experience.

Can you combine all three cities? Yes — Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido are a few hours apart by land, and CDMX connects to both by short flight or bus.

Do you need to book far in advance? Yes — one of Mexico's highest travel seasons.

How to plan a Day of the Dead trip

Check each destination’s event calendar

November 1 and 2 are the central dates of the tradition, but parades, comparsas, exhibitions and cemetery visits follow their own schedules. Check official destination channels before buying transport for a particular event. Do not assume Mexico City’s parade takes place on either of those dates.

Book accommodation and transport with time to spare

Choose the city where you want to experience the celebration and secure your accommodation first. Then arrange travel between Mexico City, Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido. Include time to reach terminals or airports and to get to your hostel on arrival.

How many destinations should I combine?

For a short trip, choose one base and enjoy its program without rushing. If you add Puerto Escondido after Oaxaca, allow a travel day and check current bus or road transfer options.

Choose your base for the celebration

Check availability at Viajero’s hostels in Mexico and choose a room that suits your trip. Balance cultural activities with time to explore and rest.
